Estrone

Meaning

Estrone ($text{E}_1$) is a naturally occurring, weaker estrogen hormone, recognized as one of the three major endogenous estrogens, alongside estradiol ($text{E}_2$) and estriol ($text{E}_3$). It is the predominant circulating estrogen after menopause, primarily synthesized in peripheral adipose tissue from adrenal androgens rather than directly by the ovaries. Estrone plays a role in maintaining bone density and modulating metabolic processes, but its clinical significance often relates to its conversion into the more potent estradiol or its association with certain estrogen-sensitive conditions. Monitoring its levels provides critical insight into a patient’s overall estrogenic environment, especially during later life stages.
