Estrogen-Thyroid Interaction

Meaning

The complex, bidirectional physiological relationship between estrogen hormones and the thyroid axis, which significantly influences the synthesis, transport, and cellular action of thyroid hormones. High estrogen levels, such as during pregnancy or with exogenous hormone use, increase the hepatic production of Thyroxine-Binding Globulin (TBG), which in turn reduces the amount of free, biologically active thyroid hormone. This interaction is a crucial consideration in managing thyroid disorders, particularly in women undergoing hormonal therapies.
