The term is now often used interchangeably with Estrogen Therapy (ET) when progesterone is not included, which is typically reserved for women without a uterus.
Mechanism
Administered estrogen acts by binding to and activating Estrogen Receptors (ER-alpha and ER-beta) located in various target tissues, including the hypothalamus, bone, cardiovascular system, and reproductive tract. In the brain, it helps stabilize thermoregulatory centers, reducing hot flashes. In bone, it inhibits osteoclast activity, slowing bone resorption.
