Estrogen-Related Receptors

Meaning

Estrogen-Related Receptors (ERRs) are a group of orphan nuclear receptors—ERRα, ERRβ, and ERRγ—that share structural homology with classical estrogen receptors (ERs) but do not bind to or are minimally activated by endogenous estrogens. These receptors are ligand-independent or bind to distinct, non-estrogen molecules, functioning as constitutive transcriptional activators. They play a significant, yet distinct, role in regulating gene expression related to energy metabolism, mitochondrial biogenesis, and cellular differentiation, particularly in tissues like muscle and fat.
