Estrogen Receptor Subtypes

Meaning

Estrogen Receptor Subtypes refer to the distinct, structurally related intracellular protein receptors that mediate the diverse biological actions of the steroid hormone estrogen within various target cells throughout the body. The two main, well-characterized variants are Estrogen Receptor alpha (ERα) and Estrogen Receptor beta (ERβ), each encoded by separate genes and exhibiting unique expression patterns. These subtypes possess differential ligand binding affinities and activate distinct downstream signaling pathways, which allows estrogen to exert a wide range of tissue-specific effects on cellular function and gene expression.
