Estrogen Receptor Modulators

Meaning

Estrogen Receptor Modulators (ERMs) are a class of compounds, often pharmaceutical, that selectively interact with estrogen receptors (ERs) to elicit tissue-specific estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects. These agents are designed to leverage the distinct distribution and function of the two receptor subtypes, ER-alpha and ER-beta, across various organs. Clinically, they are instrumental in managing conditions such as osteoporosis, breast cancer, and menopausal symptoms by providing targeted hormonal action. The most well-known subclass is the Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs).
