Estrogen Receptor Antagonism

Meaning

The pharmacological or physiological process where a substance binds to the estrogen receptor (ER) but fails to activate the receptor, thereby blocking the binding and action of endogenous estrogen. This antagonism prevents the typical estrogen-mediated gene transcription in target tissues. Clinically, this mechanism is utilized to manage estrogen-sensitive conditions, such as certain breast cancers or to modulate bone density.
