Estrogen-Progestogen Therapy

Meaning

Estrogen-Progestogen Therapy (EPT) is a systemic pharmacological intervention used primarily to manage the moderate to severe symptoms associated with menopause in individuals who still possess a uterus. This therapy involves the combined administration of estrogen to alleviate vasomotor symptoms, such as hot flashes, and genitourinary syndrome, along with a progestogen compound. The addition of the progestogen is a mandatory clinical safeguard to counteract the proliferative effect of unopposed estrogen on the endometrium, thereby significantly reducing the risk of developing endometrial hyperplasia or carcinoma.
