Estrogen Mimicry

Meaning

Estrogen Mimicry is a phenomenon where exogenous compounds, frequently environmental chemicals or plant-derived substances, possess a chemical structure sufficiently similar to endogenous estrogen to bind to and activate the body’s estrogen receptors. These substances, known as xenoestrogens or phytoestrogens, can elicit biological responses that imitate, augment, or occasionally antagonize the natural actions of estradiol. This interaction has the potential to disrupt the delicate, finely tuned balance of the entire endocrine system, impacting both reproductive and metabolic health.
