Estrogen Mimicry

Meaning

Estrogen mimicry describes the phenomenon where exogenous substances, often synthetic chemicals or certain natural compounds, bind to and activate estrogen receptors within the body, thereby initiating biological responses similar to those elicited by endogenous estrogens like estradiol. These compounds, frequently categorized as endocrine-disrupting chemicals or xenoestrogens, can exert varying degrees of estrogenic activity, potentially altering normal physiological processes. Their presence introduces a form of hormonal crosstalk that can influence cellular signaling.
