Estrogen Dominance

Meaning

Estrogen dominance describes a clinical imbalance where the ratio of estrogen to progesterone is elevated, regardless of the absolute level of estrogen itself, creating a state where estrogen’s effects predominate in target tissues. This condition is not necessarily about excessively high estrogen, but rather insufficient progesterone to exert its necessary counter-regulatory, stabilizing influence on the reproductive and metabolic systems. Such an imbalance can manifest systemically, influencing mood, fluid balance, and cellular proliferation rates. It is a critical concept in understanding premenstrual syndrome and certain proliferative disorders.
