Estradiol Withdrawal

Meaning

Estradiol withdrawal describes the constellation of physiological and symptomatic changes that occur when the concentration of the primary female sex hormone, estradiol (E2), acutely or rapidly decreases within the circulation. Clinically, this is most commonly observed at the end of the menstrual cycle, during the perimenopausal transition, or following the cessation of exogenous hormone therapy. The resulting hormonal flux can impact thermoregulation, mood, and bone turnover.
