Estradiol Suppression

Meaning

Estradiol suppression refers to the clinical strategy of intentionally lowering the circulating levels of 17$beta$-estradiol, the most potent naturally occurring estrogen, often to therapeutic or prophylactic levels. This intervention is primarily utilized in oncology to manage estrogen-receptor-positive cancers, such as breast cancer, by starving the tumor of its growth signal. In some contexts of hormonal optimization, it may also be employed to mitigate potential adverse effects of excessive aromatization of testosterone in males. This deliberate reduction is achieved through pharmacological agents that target estrogen synthesis or action.
