Estradiol Receptors

Meaning

Estradiol receptors, primarily Estrogen Receptor alpha (ERα) and Estrogen Receptor beta (ERβ), are intracellular ligand-activated transcription factors that mediate the biological actions of the steroid hormone estradiol. These proteins are distributed throughout various tissues, including reproductive organs, bone, brain, and the cardiovascular system, serving as the primary molecular conduits for estrogen signaling. Their presence and relative ratio determine a cell’s sensitivity and response to circulating estradiol concentrations.
