ESR2 Gene

Meaning

The ESR2 gene is the genetic locus responsible for encoding the Estrogen Receptor Beta (ER$beta$) protein, a key intracellular receptor that mediates a significant portion of the steroid hormone estrogen’s diverse biological actions. As a ligand-activated transcription factor, ER$beta$ is widely expressed in tissues like the ovaries, prostate, brain, and bone, where it often exerts effects that counterbalance those of the Estrogen Receptor Alpha. Genetic variations in ESR2 can therefore influence an individual’s endocrine profile and their response to hormone-modulating therapies.
