Erythroid Progenitor Cells

Meaning

Erythroid progenitor cells are a specific population of hematopoietic stem cell derivatives committed to the erythropoiesis lineage, which is the process of red blood cell formation. These highly proliferative cells reside primarily in the bone marrow and represent the intermediate stages between the pluripotent stem cell and the mature erythrocyte. Their differentiation and maturation are strictly regulated by the endocrine system, notably by the hormone erythropoietin (EPO). Clinical assessment of these cells provides critical insight into hematological status, particularly in the diagnosis and management of anemias and polycythemias.
