Erythrocytosis

Meaning

Erythrocytosis is a clinical condition characterized by an abnormal increase in the total red blood cell mass, often reflected by elevated hemoglobin, hematocrit, or red blood cell count in a standard blood panel. While a high red cell count can improve oxygen-carrying capacity, excessive levels lead to increased blood viscosity, raising the risk of thromboembolic events such such as stroke or deep vein thrombosis. In the context of hormonal health, it is a recognized potential side effect of exogenous androgen administration, which stimulates erythropoiesis.
