ERbeta

Meaning

ERbeta, or Estrogen Receptor beta, is the second major intracellular receptor for estrogen, encoded by the ESR2 gene, which often counterbalances or modulates the effects of ERalpha. This receptor is highly expressed in the prostate, lung, colon, central nervous system, and certain immune cells. Activation of ERbeta is frequently associated with anti-proliferative, anti-inflammatory, and pro-apoptotic effects, offering a regulatory brake on excessive estrogen signaling. It is considered a crucial element in maintaining tissue homeostasis.
