ERalpha

Meaning

ERalpha, or Estrogen Receptor alpha, is one of two primary intracellular receptors for the hormone estrogen, encoded by the ESR1 gene. This ligand-activated transcription factor is a key mediator of estrogen’s effects on gene expression, playing a dominant role in reproductive tissues, bone, liver, and adipose tissue. Its activation typically promotes proliferative and anabolic responses in target cells, often driving tissue growth and maintenance. Clinically, it is a significant target in breast cancer and bone health therapies.
