Epimerase Paradox

Meaning

The Epimerase Paradox describes a biological observation where an organism possesses an enzyme, an epimerase, capable of interconverting stereoisomers of a molecule, typically a sugar. Despite this enzymatic activity, the organism often cannot fully utilize the resulting epimer through subsequent metabolic pathways or transport, creating an apparent inconsistency between the enzyme’s presence and its immediate metabolic utility.
