Epimerase

Meaning

Epimerase is a specific class of isomerase enzymes responsible for catalyzing the interconversion of epimers, which are stereoisomers that differ in configuration at only one chiral center. These enzymes play a critical role in carbohydrate metabolism, enabling the body to convert one sugar isomer into another, thereby expanding the range of available substrates for various biochemical pathways. Clinically, defects in epimerase function can lead to metabolic disorders, such as certain forms of galactosemia, due to the inability to properly process specific dietary sugars. Their precise action is essential for maintaining the metabolic flexibility required for energy production and structural component synthesis.
