Epigenetic Imprinting

Meaning

Epigenetic Imprinting describes a specific form of epigenetic inheritance where a gene is expressed exclusively or preferentially from only one parental allele, without any change to the underlying DNA sequence itself. This parent-of-origin-dependent gene expression is a fundamental process, essential for normal mammalian development, growth regulation, and the intricate balance of the hypothalamic-pituitary axes. Faulty imprinting, often referred to as hormonal imprinting in the wellness space, is a deviation from this normal process that can result in permanent changes to cellular function, impacting long-term health and disease susceptibility.
