Epidermal Turnover Cycle

Meaning

The Epidermal Turnover Cycle describes the continuous, highly regulated process of cell renewal occurring in the epidermis, starting with basal keratinocyte proliferation and culminating in the desquamation of dead cells from the surface. A healthy cycle ensures the skin barrier remains intact and functional against environmental insults. Disruption to this cycle often leads to accumulation of abnormal cells or impaired barrier function. This renewal rate is highly sensitive to internal physiological signals.
