Enzymatic Cofactors

Meaning

Enzymatic Cofactors are non-protein chemical compounds, typically metal ions or small organic molecules like vitamins, that are absolutely necessary for the proper function of numerous enzymes involved in metabolic and endocrine pathways. These essential helper molecules bind to the enzyme’s active site, enabling it to catalyze a specific biochemical reaction, often involving the transfer of chemical groups. Their presence is non-negotiable for the efficient synthesis, metabolism, and clearance of all hormones, including the conversion of cholesterol into steroid hormones. Deficiencies in these cofactors can lead to clinically significant bottlenecks in critical endocrine processes.
