Environmental Estrogens

Meaning

A category of exogenous, non-naturally occurring compounds found in the environment that can mimic, antagonize, or otherwise interfere with the action of endogenous estrogen hormones in the body. These substances, also known as xenoestrogens or endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), include compounds like Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which are structurally similar enough to bind to estrogen receptors. Exposure to these agents can disrupt the delicate hormonal balance, potentially impacting reproductive health, metabolism, and immune function.
