This mechanism ensures that an organism’s internal physiological processes, including sleep-wake cycles, hormone secretion, and metabolic activity, are optimally timed with the planet’s 24-hour light-dark cycle. A failure of proper entrainment, often seen with shift work or rapid trans-meridian travel, results in circadian misalignment and a state commonly known as jet lag.

The term is derived from the French entraîner, meaning “to draw along” or “to train,” and is used in physics and biology to describe the synchronization of two or more independent oscillating systems. In the context of circadian rhythms, the concept gained scientific traction as researchers sought to understand how the body’s internal clock was set by external factors. The underlying rhythm is referred to as circadian, from the Latin circa meaning “around” and dies meaning “day.”
Mechanism
The primary mechanism of entrainment involves external cues called zeitgebers, or “time-givers,” with light being the most potent for mammals. Light is detected by specialized photoreceptors in the retina which transmit signals directly to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the master pacemaker of the circadian system in the hypothalamus. This signal then adjusts the phase of the molecular clock—a transcriptional-translational feedback loop involving core clock genes like CLOCK and BMAL1—to align the internal 24-hour period precisely with the external 24-hour day.
