Enteroendocrine System

Meaning

The Enteroendocrine System comprises a diffuse network of specialized cells distributed throughout the gastrointestinal tract, from the stomach to the colon, functioning as a critical component of the body’s endocrine network. These cells are highly sensitive to luminal stimuli and, in response, synthesize and secrete a diverse array of peptide hormones directly into the bloodstream or interstitial fluid, thereby regulating vital digestive processes, nutrient absorption, and metabolic homeostasis.
