Enterocytes

Meaning

Enterocytes are specialized columnar epithelial cells lining the small intestine, critical for nutrient absorption. Equipped with a dense brush border of microvilli, these cells expand the absorptive surface. Their primary physiological role involves the digestion and absorption of most dietary nutrients, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals, from the intestinal lumen into the bloodstream.
