Enterocytes

Meaning

Enterocytes are the tall, columnar epithelial cells that line the inner surface of the small and large intestines, forming the primary barrier and functional unit of the intestinal mucosa. These cells are fundamentally responsible for the final digestion, selective absorption of nutrients, water, and electrolytes from the gut lumen into the bloodstream. They also play a critical role in the gut-hormone axis by secreting various regulatory peptides. The integrity and health of these cells are paramount for systemic health and the proper absorption of oral hormonal therapies.
