Enterochromaffin Cells

Meaning

Enterochromaffin Cells are specialized enteroendocrine cells located within the epithelial lining of the gastrointestinal tract, functioning as the body’s major non-neuronal source of the neurotransmitter and hormone serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT). These cells are pivotal components of the gut-brain axis, integrating mechanical and chemical signals from the intestinal lumen to regulate gut motility, secretion, and visceral sensation. Their hormonal output indirectly influences systemic mood, appetite, and bone metabolism through circulating serotonin.
