Energy Expenditure Homeostasis

Meaning

Energy Expenditure Homeostasis is the dynamic, self-regulating process by which the body maintains a stable balance between the total energy consumed (intake) and the total energy utilized (expenditure) over time. This includes regulating the basal metabolic rate, the thermic effect of food, and energy used for physical activity, all to maintain a relatively stable body weight and body composition. Disruptions to this critical hormonal and metabolic equilibrium are a central driver of weight gain, obesity, and related metabolic diseases.
