Endotoxin Contamination

Meaning

Endotoxin contamination refers to the unwanted presence of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in a substance intended for therapeutic use, injection, or ingestion. LPS are large molecules found in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, and they are potent pyrogens. Their presence can induce a severe inflammatory response in the human body, potentially leading to fever, chills, and systemic toxicity. This contamination is a critical quality control concern in pharmaceutical, peptide, and supplement manufacturing processes.
