Endothelial Senescence

Meaning

Endothelial senescence is the process where the endothelial cells, which line the interior surface of blood vessels, enter a state of irreversible growth arrest, ceasing to divide and acquiring a pro-inflammatory, pro-thrombotic secretory phenotype. This cellular aging process significantly impairs vascular function, leading to reduced nitric oxide bioavailability and increased arterial stiffness. It is a key biological driver of cardiovascular disease and a central component of vascular aging.
