Endothelial Function

Meaning

Endothelial Function refers to the physiological capability of the endothelium, the single-cell layer lining the interior of blood vessels, to regulate vascular tone, coagulation, and inflammation. Optimal function is characterized by robust production of vasodilators, particularly nitric oxide (NO), and minimal pro-thrombotic or pro-inflammatory states. Impaired endothelial function is an early and sensitive marker for cardiovascular risk, often preceding overt hypertension. This function is highly sensitive to hormonal status and metabolic stress.
