Endothelial Cell Function

Meaning

Endothelial Cell Function describes the multifaceted physiological roles performed by the monolayer of cells lining the interior of all blood vessels, acting as a critical interface between the blood and the vessel wall. Optimal function includes maintaining vascular tone, regulating hemostasis, controlling vascular permeability, and mediating localized inflammatory responses. Impairment of this function, known as endothelial dysfunction, is recognized as the earliest measurable event in the development of atherosclerosis and most cardiovascular diseases.
