Endometrioma

Meaning

An endometrioma is a specific type of ovarian cyst that forms when endometrial tissue, which normally lines the uterus, implants and grows on the ovary. This ectopic tissue responds cyclically to hormonal fluctuations, leading to recurrent bleeding and the accumulation of old blood, giving the cyst its characteristic “chocolate cyst” appearance. Endometriomas are a clinical manifestation of endometriosis, a condition that can cause chronic pelvic pain, inflammation, and fertility challenges. Their presence is a significant finding in the assessment of reproductive and gynecological health.
