Endogenous Testosterone Production

Meaning

Endogenous testosterone production refers to the natural synthesis and secretion of the primary male sex hormone, testosterone, by the body’s own endocrine system, predominantly in the Leydig cells of the testes in males and the adrenal glands and ovaries in females. This intrinsic process is meticulously regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis to maintain circulating levels necessary for reproductive function, bone density, muscle mass, and psychological well-being. A decline in this production is a central feature of hypogonadism and age-related hormonal changes.
