Endogenous Pacemakers

Meaning

Endogenous Pacemakers are the internal biological clocks, comprised of specific genes and protein complexes, that generate and regulate the body’s intrinsic circadian rhythms, operating independently of external time cues. The central pacemaker is the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus, which synchronizes peripheral clocks in tissues like the liver and adrenals. These pacemakers are essential for governing the timing of sleep-wake cycles, hormone secretion, and metabolic processes.
