Endocrine Withdrawal Syndrome

Meaning

Endocrine Withdrawal Syndrome is a collection of physiological and psychological symptoms that arise following the abrupt cessation or significant reduction of exogenous hormone administration or, less commonly, after the removal of a hormone-producing gland. The syndrome occurs because the body’s native endocrine system, suppressed by the external source, requires a finite period to reactivate and restore endogenous hormone production and receptor sensitivity. Clinically, managing this period requires careful tapering of therapy and monitoring of the recovering hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal or adrenal axes to mitigate symptomatic discomfort and prevent acute deficiency.
