Endocrine Resource Partitioning

Meaning

Endocrine Resource Partitioning describes the fundamental physiological process by which the endocrine system strategically allocates limited metabolic precursors, primarily cholesterol, toward the synthesis of specific steroid hormones based on the body’s immediate and perceived survival needs. Under conditions of high chronic stress, for instance, resources may be preferentially diverted toward the synthesis of cortisol at the expense of sex hormone or DHEA production. This process represents a critical, adaptive mechanism designed to prioritize survival functions over reproductive or anabolic processes.
