Endocrine-Renal Axis

Meaning

The Endocrine-Renal Axis describes the bidirectional and integrated communication system between the endocrine glands and the kidneys, which is essential for systemic fluid, electrolyte, and blood pressure regulation. The kidneys are not only target organs for hormones like aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone but also function as endocrine organs themselves, producing critical regulators like erythropoietin and renin. This interconnected axis ensures whole-body homeostasis, linking hormonal signals to renal filtration and reabsorption processes. Dysfunction in one component often precipitates pathology in the other, such as in chronic kidney disease or hypertension.
