Endocrine Precursor Competition

Meaning

Endocrine precursor competition describes a phenomenon where multiple steroid hormones share a common biochemical substrate, or precursor molecule, within the steroidogenesis pathway. The relative demand for and activity of the enzymes responsible for converting this precursor determine the ultimate output ratio of the final hormones. This competition can lead to imbalances if one pathway is excessively upregulated or the precursor pool is limited.
