Endocrine-Immune Axis

Meaning

The complex, bidirectional communication network and regulatory interplay between the endocrine system, which manages hormonal signaling, and the immune system, which orchestrates the body’s defense mechanisms. Hormones significantly modulate immune cell function, cytokine production, and inflammatory responses, while immune-derived mediators, in turn, influence the secretion of hormones from glands like the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenals. This axis is fundamental to maintaining systemic homeostasis and is critically involved in the pathogenesis of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.
