Mechanism
A robust feedback loop involves the hypothalamus releasing a releasing hormone, which stimulates the pituitary to release a trophic hormone, which in turn stimulates a peripheral gland to release its effector hormone. The effector hormone then feeds back to the hypothalamus and pituitary, inhibiting further release. Integrity is maintained by appropriate receptor sensitivity and timely signaling; conversely, chronic stress or aging can blunt this sensitivity, resulting in persistent over- or under-secretion of hormones.
