Meaning

A fundamental physiological regulatory process where the end products of a hormonal axis, typically a peripheral gland hormone, suppress the secretion of the upstream signaling hormones from the pituitary and/or hypothalamus. This negative feedback loop is essential for maintaining hormonal homeostasis and preventing overproduction, ensuring the body’s endocrine system remains tightly controlled and balanced. Clinical interventions must account for this mechanism to avoid iatrogenic suppression.
