Endocrine Disruptors

Meaning

Endocrine Disruptors are exogenous or endogenous substances capable of interfering with the synthesis, secretion, transport, binding, action, or elimination of natural hormones in the body, thus disrupting normal homeostatic regulation. These chemicals often mimic or block receptor binding sites, or alter hormone metabolism, leading to adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects. Recognizing these agents is critical for optimizing wellness, as chronic low-dose exposure can lead to subtle yet significant shifts in endocrine set points. They represent an environmental challenge to physiological stability.
