Endocrine Disruption

Meaning

Endocrine disruption refers to the alteration of the endocrine system’s function by exogenous substances, leading to adverse health effects in an intact organism, its offspring, or populations. These chemicals, known as endocrine-disrupting chemicals or EDCs, interfere with hormone synthesis, secretion, transport, binding, action, or elimination. This interference can mimic natural hormones, block their effects, or alter hormone levels, impacting various physiological processes.
