End-Stage Renal Disease

Meaning

End-Stage Renal Disease, or ESRD, represents the most severe and irreversible stage of chronic kidney disease, characterized by the complete or near-complete loss of kidney function. At this advanced stage, the kidneys are no longer capable of adequately filtering waste products, regulating fluid balance, or maintaining electrolyte and acid-base homeostasis essential for sustaining life. Without intervention, the accumulation of toxins in the body leads to a critical systemic imbalance.
