Emotional Lability

Meaning

A clinical term characterizing rapid, exaggerated, and often involuntary shifts in emotional expression that are disproportionate to the immediate external stimuli. This state involves swift transitions between different affective states, such as laughing, crying, or anger, sometimes occurring in quick succession. It is a neurological or endocrinological symptom, distinct from typical mood swings, and can significantly impair social and occupational functioning.
