Electrophysiological Remodeling

Meaning

Electrophysiological remodeling is a pathological or adaptive process involving changes in the electrical properties of excitable cells, most notably cardiac myocytes and neurons, which result from alterations in ion channel expression, function, or intracellular signaling. This restructuring modifies the cell’s action potential characteristics, impulse conduction, and overall excitability. In hormonal health, this is particularly relevant in cardiovascular risk assessment, as sex hormones can directly influence ion channel function in the heart. Significant remodeling can predispose an individual to arrhythmias.
