Electrolyte Imbalance

Meaning

Electrolyte imbalance is a deviation from the normal, tightly controlled concentrations of essential mineral ions, such as sodium, potassium, and calcium, within the body’s plasma and interstitial fluids. These charged particles, known as electrolytes, are indispensable for maintaining cellular osmotic pressure, nerve conduction, and muscle contractility. A significant imbalance can lead to acute dysfunction across multiple organ systems.
