Electrolyte Imbalance

Meaning

Electrolyte imbalance refers to a disruption in the concentration of essential minerals, known as electrolytes, within the body’s fluids. These electrically charged ions, including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and phosphate, are vital for maintaining fluid balance, nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and proper acid-base regulation. An imbalance signifies either an excess (hyper-) or a deficit (hypo-) of one or more of these crucial ions, leading to physiological dysfunction.
