Electrical Remodeling

Meaning

Electrical Remodeling is a critical pathophysiological process characterized by sustained, adverse alterations in the electrical properties of excitable cells, most notably cardiac myocytes and various classes of neurons. This process involves detrimental changes in ion channel expression, density, and function, which fundamentally modify the cell’s action potential and overall excitability threshold. In cardiology, it is a key mechanism underlying various arrhythmias, where the heart’s electrical signaling becomes unstable and erratic, compromising pump function. This remodeling process can be triggered by chronic hormonal imbalances, sustained psychological stress, or age-related structural changes, ultimately impacting the fundamental rhythmic integrity of biological systems.
